| Flipbook animation stepping | Animated water, lava, and fire textures disable frame interpolation, producing authentic stepped frame-by-frame animation matching Java Beta 1.7.3 rather than smooth modern blending. |
| Fast-graphics leaf textures | Leaf textures switch to clean-room opaque black backgrounds in Fast graphics mode, replicating Java Beta's non-transparent leaf canopy rendering. |
| Leaf shading & ambient occlusion | Leaf blocks feature flatter Beta-style shading with reduced ambient occlusion and directional face shading across bottom and side faces. |
| Entity blob shadows | Authentic circular dark blob shadows projected under mobs and players, replacing dynamic or absent Bedrock shadows. |
| Light source face dimming | Torches, glowstone, fire, and lava feature authentic directional face dimming on side faces rather than uniform full-bright faces. |
| Sand shading & ambient occlusion | Darker sand shading and ambient occlusion tuned to seamlessly match sandstone. |
| Deterministic texture alignment | Block textures enforce deterministic alignment across all faces, eliminating randomized texture rotations. |
| Fence directional lighting | Directional lighting is removed from fences to eliminate vertical shading seams. |
| Sign shadow elimination | Entity shadows are disabled on sign faces to eliminate artificial darkening behind written text. |
| Classic death screen & camera | Java Beta death sequence featuring the classic red gradient overlay, Game over! title, narrowing 70° FOV camera, player death flop animation, smoke puff, and lethal hit sound, with the HUD visible underneath. |

| Death drop scatter | Inventory and armour scatter around the player upon death using classic Beta throw velocity and spread. |
| Herobrine encounters | Rare atmospheric sightings with an eight-hour minimum cooldown between encounters (averaging approximately once per in-game day). |
Combat
| Mechanic | Betafied behaviour |
|---|---|
| Shields | Removed. Shields do not exist in the pack. |
| Armour protection formula | Armour protection scales linearly with remaining durability: ((points - 1) × durabilityRemaining) ÷ durabilityMax + 1, capped at 20. |
| Armour point values by slot | Helmet and boots provide 3 points each; chestplate provides 8; leggings provide 6. Values are identical across leather, gold, chain, iron, and diamond. |
| Armour mitigation formula | Uses Beta's integer remainder accumulation, carrying fractional damage over across successive hits. |
| Armour durability damage | Armour loses one durability point per hit taken, including falls, fire, and lava. |
| Armour break sound | Plays the classic random.break sound when a piece shatters. |
| Post-Beta armour | Netherite and turtle helmets provide zero protection in the damage formula. |

Block Placement & Mechanics
| Block / mechanic | Betafied behaviour |
|---|---|
| Stairs | Classic four-direction placement only. No upside-down stairs or corner states. |
| Slabs | Bottom-half placement only. Top slabs cannot be placed. |
| Double slabs | Placing two matching slabs (stone, cobblestone, sandstone, wooden) on top of each other merges them into an authentic classic double slab block occupying the lower block space. |
| Wooden slab properties | Wooden slabs use stone-slab break and step sounds and are immune to fire, mirroring Java Beta's stone-derived slab behavior. |
| Logs | Vertical placement only (no horizontal log rotation). |
| Fences | Crafted from six sticks (not planks). Connects only to other fences. |
| Fence gate | Does not exist in Beta 1.7.3. |
| Doors | Can only be placed on the top face of a solid block, do not stack in inventories, and break into single items when their support is mined. |
| Double chests | Adjacent chests merge into a 54-slot double chest; chests obey Beta pairing rules (cannot merge with an existing double chest) and cannot open if blocked above. |
| Farmland trampling (walking) | Walking across farmland has a chance to turn it into dirt. Sneaking prevents trampling. |
| Farmland jumping | Jumping onto farmland does not trample crops, matching Beta mechanics. |
| Crop trampling drops | Trampled mature wheat drops wheat and seeds; immature crops drop seeds only. |
| Mob trampling | Walking mobs trample farmland. |
| Fence trick | A fence placed directly beneath farmland prevents walking trample from above. |
| Instant bone meal on wheat | Bone meal instantly grows wheat to full maturity. |
| Cake | Six-slice cake healing 3 HP per bite. Does not make eating sounds, and cannot be consumed at full health. |
| Sign placement | Places classic signs only; standing signs turn to match the placing player's orientation (Beta ItemSign), and signs cannot be placed against interactive door or trapdoor hinges. |
| Extended pistons | Piston heads remain intact and correctly attached across chunk load and unload boundaries without breaking. |
| Crafting table hardness | Workbench hardness is set to 2.5, matching chests and authentic Beta mining time. |
| Bedrock floor height | Irregular bedrock layer generated between Y=0 and Y=4. |

| Quirk | How it works in Betafied |
|---|---|
| Swords break wooden stairs faster | Swords break wooden stairs faster than axes, reproducing Beta's tool-speed bug. |
| Swords break cobwebs fastest | Swords break cobwebs faster than shears or other tools. |
| Swords break leaves faster | Swords break leaf blocks faster than bare hands or axes. |
| Swords break wool faster | Swords break wool faster than other tools (useful before acquiring shears). |
| Swords break pumpkins faster | Swords break pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns faster than axes. |
| Redstone ore mining is slow | Mining redstone ore with a pickaxe is intentionally slow, matching Beta speeds. |
| Stairs drop planks | Breaking wooden stairs drops oak planks instead of the stair block. |
| Sheep drop wool when punched | Punching a sheep drops 1–3 wool blocks without needing shears. |
| Bare-hand block speeds | Holding a sword breaks non-tool blocks roughly 15% faster than bare hands. |
World Generation

Architecture Notes
Background tasks like chunk scrubbing and inventory cleanup are batched across game ticks to maintain high framerates and prevent lag spikes.
- Background maintenance jobs run with configured tick budgets to prevent stalling.
- Inventory normalization ensures modern items do not persist in player inventories.
- Scrubbing and migration systems are scoped strictly to vanilla identifiers so third-party addons are unaffected.
