Tips & tricks

Beta 1.7.3 contains several unique mechanics and behaviors that were modified in later updates. These tips cover tool efficiencies, boat physics, armor scaling and debug tools.

Crop trampling

Crops are fragile in Beta: walking on farmland breaks whatever is growing on it. Sneak while crossing, or place a block (such as a fence) directly under the farmland so you can walk and jump on it freely.

Armour economy

Iron and diamond armor give identical protection and differ only in durability. Craft iron armor and save your diamonds for a sword and tools.

Fragile boats

  • Boats shatter into planks and sticks if you hit an obstacle at full speed.
  • Wake particles appear behind the boat when moving fast enough to break on impact.
  • Slow down with your reverse key before docking or entering narrow rivers.

Use the F3 debug radar

Press F3 to show your coordinates, FPS and an entity count, and to draw entity tags above nearby mobs within render distance. It doubles as a spawner finder and a creeper warning system.

Tools worth carrying

Two iron tools are especially practical early on. A water bucket creates upward water columns for climbing and cushions falls. Shears harvest up to three wool from a sheep without killing it, providing enough material for beds.

Habits that save runs

  • Place torches regularly while mining to prevent mob spawns.
  • Carry a water bucket to scale vertical cliffs and neutralize lava pools.
  • Mark your base before you explore; there are no maps or coordinates on the HUD by default.
  • Cook food before you leave, and keep a spare stack at base.
