Recipes that differ from modern Minecraft
| Item | Beta 1.7.3 | Modern Minecraft |
|---|---|---|
| Fence | 6 sticks across two rows | 4 planks + 2 sticks |
| Book | 3 paper in a vertical column (no leather) | 3 paper + 1 leather (shapeless) |
| Stone button | 1 stone in any single slot | 1 stone (but modern added wooden buttons) |
| Mushroom stew | Red mushroom over brown over bowl, vertical | Bowl + both mushrooms (shapeless) |
| Bookshelf | 3 books in the middle row, planks top and bottom | Same shape, modern books |
Fences need six sticks, not planks. If a fence recipe will not complete, this is almost always why.

Recipes that do not change
Most core recipes remain identical to modern Minecraft, including torches, chests, furnaces, tools, armor, slabs and stairs. Only the items marked with a changed badge differ.
Things you cannot craft yet
- Enchanted books and items: enchanting does not exist.
- Potions and brewing stands: brewing arrived in 1.0.
- Anvils and name tags: later versions.
- Cauldrons, hoppers, comparators, repeaters beyond the basic one: all post-1.7.3.
- Fence gates, wooden buttons, iron bars and glass panes: added in Beta 1.8.
- Anything requiring a villager trade.
Because iron and diamond armor offer equal damage reduction, crafting iron armor early provides full protection and preserves diamonds for pickaxes.
