Never dig straight down. Without sprinting, escaping unexpected lava or deep drops is difficult. Dig a stairwell down, or mine two blocks side by side while standing across the boundary.
Your first day
Your priorities on day one are straightforward: gather wood, craft stone tools, make torches, and build an enclosed shelter before sunset.
1Punch a tree
Find a nearby tree and punch the trunk to collect wood logs. Gather about a dozen logs. Because there is no sprint, choose trees close to where you plan to build.
2Craft wooden planks
One log crafts into four planks in your inventory 2×2 crafting grid. Wooden planks are required for tools, sticks and shelter.
Wooden Planks
3Craft a crafting table
Place four planks in your 2×2 grid to craft a crafting table. Placing and opening it provides the 3×3 crafting grid needed for most recipes.
Crafting Table
4Craft sticks
Place two planks vertically to craft four sticks. Sticks are required for tools, weapons and torches.
Stick
5Craft a wooden pickaxe
Craft a wooden pickaxe using three planks and two sticks. You need a pickaxe to harvest cobblestone; breaking stone by hand drops nothing.
Wooden Pickaxe
6Craft a wooden sword
Craft a wooden sword with two planks above a stick. While stone weapons are available shortly, a sword helps defend against early creepers and spiders if dusk approaches.
Wooden Sword
7Mine cobblestone
Find exposed stone on a cliff or dig down through dirt to find it. Mine at least ten blocks of stone, which drop as cobblestone.
8Craft stone tools
Use cobblestone and sticks to craft stone tools: a stone pickaxe, axe, shovel and sword. Stone tools mine faster and have greater durability than wooden tools.
Stone Pickaxe
9Gather more wood
Chop down two or three more trees with your stone axe. You will need extra planks for shelter walls, a door, chests and a bed.
10Hunt pigs for food
Hunt nearby pigs for raw porkchops. Eating restores health directly in Betafied, which allows healing during combat without waiting for hunger saturation.
Cooked Porkchop
Cooking raises the heal from 3 health to 8.
11Gather wool from a sheep
Kill sheep to collect three wool, or use shears if you obtain iron later. Three wool and three planks craft a bed, which lets you skip the night and set your respawn point.
12Mine coal
Look for coal ore seams on cliff faces and cave walls. Mine as much as you can find to produce torches and fuel your furnace.
13Craft torches
Combine one coal or charcoal with one stick in your inventory grid to craft four torches. Light prevents hostile mobs from spawning in and around your shelter.

14Dig out a shelter
Digging into a hillside is often faster than building a standalone structure. Hollow out a room, place torches inside, and seal the entrance with a wooden door.
Wooden Door
15Craft a furnace
Place eight cobblestone in a ring around the crafting grid to make a furnace. Furnaces smelt ores into ingots, cook food, and smelt sand into glass.

16Cook your porkchops
Place raw porkchops in the top furnace slot and coal in the bottom slot. Cooking raises the healing value from 3 health points to 8. One piece of coal cooks eight items.

17Craft a bed
Craft a bed using three wool across the top row and three planks across the middle row. Sleeping in a bed skips the night and updates your respawn point.

18Survive the night
Without sprint you cannot outrun creepers, and there is no penalty for waiting out the night. Stay indoors to smelt ores, craft supplies, or mine a stairwell downward.
- Keep the door shut. An enclosed, well-lit shelter keeps hostile mobs out until sunrise.
- Place torches on the exterior wall near the door to prevent mobs from congregating at your entrance.
- If you have a bed, sleep to skip the night. Otherwise, spend the night smelting or digging a stairwell down.
Your second day
On your second day, focus on finding iron underground to upgrade your tools and armor.
19Mine iron ore
Dig your stairwell deeper underground. Iron ore generates in clusters inside stone. Mine it with a stone pickaxe or better; mining iron ore with wood drops nothing.
20Smelt the ore into ingots
Smelt the iron ore blocks in a furnace to produce iron ingots, which are used to craft metal tools, armor and buckets.
Iron Ingot
One lump of coal smelts eight ore blocks.
21Craft an iron pickaxe
Spend your first three ingots on a pickaxe. Iron tools mine far faster than stone and are the minimum tier for gold, redstone, lapis and diamond ore.
Iron Pickaxe
22Craft a chest
Craft a chest with eight planks. Placing two chests side by side creates a double chest with 54 inventory slots to store mined resources.

23Keep mining
As you mine deeper, you will encounter gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamonds. Crafting a compass from four iron ingots and redstone dust points toward the world spawn point, helping you find your way back home.

24Craft iron armour
In Beta 1.7.3, iron and diamond armor provide equal damage reduction; they differ only in durability. Craft iron armor and an iron sword first, saving diamonds for pickaxes.

25Start a wheat farm
Use a hoe to till dirt near water into farmland. Tilling grass can drop wheat seeds. Plant the seeds and harvest mature wheat to bake bread. Walking or jumping on farmland tramples the crop, so sneak or place water walkways between rows.

26Mine diamonds
Diamond ore generates in small deposits near bedrock (levels 1 to 15). Branch-mine at this depth using an iron pickaxe, carry a water bucket for lava, and use your first three diamonds to craft a diamond pickaxe.
